Studio makeup-policy template

A plain-language makeup-lesson policy you can copy, edit, and hand to families — covers short-notice cancellations, illness, and how many makeups roll over.

Draft. This resource hasn't been reviewed by a music teacher yet — use your judgment and adapt it for your studio before relying on it.

Makeup Lesson Policy — [Your Studio Name]

Copy this into your own studio handbook or welcome packet and edit the bracketed parts to match your own policy — this is a starting point, not a rule everyone should follow as-is.

  1. Notice window. Families who cancel at least [24 hours] before a lesson are offered a makeup, scheduling permitting.
  2. Short-notice and no-shows. Lessons missed with less notice, or missed entirely, are [charged as taught / not eligible for a makeup] — state your own policy here.
  3. Teacher-side cancellations. If I need to cancel (illness, emergency, travel), you'll always be offered a makeup or a credit.
  4. How many makeups carry over. Up to [two] makeup credits may be banked per term and expire at [the end of the term / X weeks].
  5. Illness. Please don't send a sick student to an in-person lesson — contact me and we'll find a makeup time or switch that week to a remote lesson.
